Demise of John Arthur. Son of Former City Treasurer--Blind for Some Time. John Arthur, aged 63 years, retired street foreman of the Consumers Gas Company, died of a complication of ailments at 8 a.m. today at his home in Cumru Township near the File Mile House, after an illness of five years. He was blind for some time and has been a patient in several hospitals. Mr. Arthur was born in 1861 at the Arthur homestead, 127 South Fourth Street. He was a son of the late Col. John E. Arthur, city treasurer for seven terms, and a veteran of the Mexican and Civil wars. Deceased, when a machinist apprentice in the Reading Company's shops, left reading in 1881, after graduating from the local high school. He was employed by various railroads west of the Mississippi River between 1881 and 1895, when he returned to Reading and worked for the gas company until 1903 when he retired. Surviving besides his widow, Gertrude, are two sons, Elliott, Charleston, WV and Raymond, Reading; several grandchildren, two brothers, Frank M. superintendent of the UGI Company of Philadelphia, and Amos A., a Methodist clergyman, stationed at Wissahickon near Philadelphia; one sister, Mrs. Samuel A. Mester, Columbus, O., and a nephew, John A. Keppelman, president of the Consumers Gas Company this city.

Arthur--In Cumru Township, on the 20th inst., John Arthur, aged 62 years. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral without further notice from the residence of Funeral Director. I. Miller, 48 S. 4th St. on Saturday at 2? p.m. Interment in Charles Evans Cemetery. Remains may be viewed at above address Friday evening.

With a brother, Rev. Amos A. Arthur of Philadelphia, officiating, the funeral of John Arthur, former street foreman of the Consumers Gas Company, took place from the parlors of Undertaker Miller. The bearers, all employees of the gas company, were William Williams, Frederick Crouse, Edward Metzgar, A. Bollinger, A. Sterner and Henry Obst. The body was dressed in a black suit and rested in an oak casket with antique silver trimmings. In compliance with the request of the family there were no tributes. Interment was made in Charles Evans Cemetery.
